SASE — Next generation Free Electron Lasers

CERN Accelerating science

This website is no longer maintained. Its content may be obsolete. Please visit http://home.cern/ for current CERN information.

Advances in the physics ans technology of the photoinjectors, linear colliders, insertion devices and free-electron laser make it now possible to generate coherent radiation in the x-ray region by means of Self-Amplified-Spontaneous-Emission (SASE) process.
This radiation has much higer brigtness, shorter pulses and coherence than present third generation light sources.
The status of the physics and technology involved in a radiation source based on SASE will be reviewed, together with an overview of the on-ging activities on this field around the world.
